Hey thanks for your message (and everyone else sending the same sorta thing). It’s great isn’t it? Obviously it’s fantastic that gay marriage (or just ‘marriage’) is a thing Americans have, it’s a huge step and a long time coming.
But I have… mixed feelings right now.
My worry is that I’m seeing all of these websites and places in the US lit up, changing their logos and lights to wonderful rainbows… I hope I’m just being needlessly cynical here but it seems to me that after today a lot of these people and places will just change it back to how it was before, wash their hands and be like “welp that’s gay people sorted at least we got the opportunity to show the world how supportive we are by adding a rainbow” completely missing the fact that this is just one step out of many. There are still so many things that need to be sorted, in just America there are still the problems of employment rights, housing rights, adoption, homophobia, trans rights, all of these issues will still be affecting LGBT people today. Will we be seeing little rainbows again once these are sorted?
There are still many many countries that haven’t even come close to what America just achieved, a few where being gay is still punishable by death. On the flip-side, a few days ago Mexico also passed same-sex marriage laws of its’ own. None of this receives the same attention, you won’t see little rainbows on Vine or Tumblr or whatever for anything else. America is not the centre of the world, and passing one ruling out of the many more required is not the finish line.
I am happy for the people of America who can now finally marry, it truly is a great day, I just hope that other people out there realise there is still a long, long way to go, and I sincerely hope all of your support is not just a 24 hour passing thought.
